Bacon MintsIf you have a hankering for bacon, you may want to give these mints a try. For just 5 bucks, you can get a couple of tins, described on the site: “Each one of these mints tastes like a delicious slice of crispy bacon with just a hint of mint flavor to give it that extra punch! It may sound weird but once you taste it, you’ll see that mint and bacon is a match made in heaven. Each 2-1/4″ x 2″ x 1/2″ tin contains one hundred mints.”

Spiderman 2Advertising and marketing relies on Photoshop more than almost any other industry. They don’t always get it right, however, and the photoshop disasters blog catches their mistakes for our entertainment. Check out the Spiderman 2 poster, for example. Kristen Dunst’s arm must be at least 10 feet long to wrap around Spidey that way. Inspector Gadget has nothing on her.

Why did it take them so long to start doing this? The New York Times describes that movie theaters are going to start showing more live events. “Movie theaters are not just for movies anymore. Coming soon will be broadcasts of live baseball games, rock concerts, classic TV shows and an array of other offerings not associated with the silver screen.” That sounds like a great idea. There are some events that I’m not willing to pay the money to see live, and some others that pose a geographical challenge. In those cases, I may want to make it special and see and hear it with better quality than my living room allows. I could see myself spending $10 to watch a concert or sporting event on the big screen.

thingillusionI ran across this post at Neatorama. Their description says “The pic of Marvel Comics superhero The Thing of Fantastic Four is definitely one of the best examples of trompe l’oeil I’ve seen. It was drawn by Justen Ladda in 1981 at PS 37 in the Bronx, New York.”

sandcastleWhen I think of sand castles, I think of the overturned bucket full of sand that my 4-year-old nephew sets up on the beach. Of course, that’s usually followed by my 3-year-old niece coming along like Godzilla stomping the tower to the ground. This gallery of sand castles shows creations that are quite a bit more complex. I don’t think I have the patience for competitive sand sculpting, but I have to say that these folks do an excellent job. Click on the thumbnail to see a larger image of one of my favorites.

Giant Connect 4If you’re like me, you probably have thought to yourself that it would be difficult to make the classic strategy game “Connect Four” any better. As they say, bigger is better, so one way to do it would be to make the whole thing giant. That’s just what the folks at Master Games did, and I have to say, the contraption looks pretty impressive. Unfortunately, the $260 price tag is a little more than the novelty of the game is worth, but I like the idea.

Here’s a nice download tip from Lifehacker. A simple freeware application, Windows Hidie can hide any window on your desktop from view with a simple keystroke or through its slightly more advanced interface. When Windows Hidie hides a window, it disappears from your taskbar and from the Alt-Tab switcher, so essentially it’s completely gone from the casual onlooker’s view.

MP3 Pimple FighterThe market for MP3 players is pretty well saturated at this point. You’re either getting an iPod, or you’re trying to save money. But what if there were some other magical feature that set the player apart? Would you believe that technology wizards in Tokyo have created an MP3 player which helps you control acne. The mpion releases positively and negatively charged ions, which supposedly neutralize breakouts. Here are the instructions: Touch the device to the offending area as you listen to tunes, flip the switch to Minus, and hold for five to 10 minutes. Allegedly, the negative ions open pores and replenish moisture. Then, flip it to Positive and hold to reduce oil and close your pores back up.

Earth Water and AirShown in the image are representations of all the Earth’s water and all of the air in Earth’s atmosphere collected into spheres and placed next to the mass of the planet for comparison. The site where I found this image also includes sources of information for finding the mass of all of the water and air, and some complicated math which claims to prove the accuracy of the claim. Whether or not the math actually proves anything, I think the picture is pretty interesting. There is also a post at boing boing about this image, which means a lot of users are sharing their comments about it.

ArcadeThis is the arcade that my inner 12-year-old would put together if I were given a blank check and access to the favorite games of my youth. Peter Hirschberg has made that pipe dream into a reality. With over 60 games spanning video game history from Pong to Donkey Kong, he has gathered a very impressive collection. He spent 2 years planning and building the structure, and describes it on his site.

Luna City Arcade is our private home arcade. It is housed in a seperate dedicated building, right next to our house. The building itself is 60′ x 40′ with 2 stories, a bathroom, and 12′ ceilings. The entire main floor is dedicated entirely to the arcade, so it is 2400 sq ft of wide open arcade space. Vintage posters for ’80s movies, toys, and video games line the walls, along with other period kitsch.

If you just need a quick way to convert a music file to MP3 format, or a Word Document to PDF, or a BMP image to a JPG file, you can do it online for free with Zamzar. You may have to deal with a pop-up ad or two, and there is a limit of 100 MB for the free version, but that’s plenty of space for almost any common audio file, document file, or image file. It’s probably not the best free tool for video conversion because of the limit, but it looks like it would be convenient in some situations.

Easy Chair MountI have had a computer in the living room next to my easy chair for about 5 years now. I use it for working, reference, shopping, blogging, and gaming so that I can multi-task and spend time with my family while I’m also getting something done. I’ve had various methods for keeping the monitor close at hand so I could see it, from setting it on a side table, mounting it on the wall with an arm mount, and I currently have it sitting precariously on a plant stand. Because of that history, this Easy Chair monitor mount would be perfect for me. At $285, the cost is a little steep, but it would probably be worth it if it could prevent my 2-year-old from falling into the monitor and hitting his head again.

Snickers ChargedPiggybacking on the energy drink craze, Mars is making a limited edition Snickers bar infused with caffeine, taurine, and vitamin B. The candyblog reviewer likes it overall, but complains about the lingering bitter aftertaste. I guess it’s not surprising to see the most popular recreational drug in the world added to a candy bar, considering the fascination Americans have with caffeine. If you’re interested, you can also pick up some caffeinated soap, water, lollipops, breath spray, dissolving strips, sunflower seeds, and gum.

HoverchairBritish company, Hoverit, has created the first in what they say will be a line of levitating furniture. Using powerful repelling magnets, the lounger sits on a cushion of air, and they claim that the magnets are also good for back and muscle problems. It’s a very cool concept, but the molded plastic doesn’t look like it would be too comfortable, despite the feeling of floating. The cost (5,875 British Pounds, or 11,675 U.S. Dollars) is a deterrent as well. I saw this originally on metro.co.uk, and the manufacturers website is called hoverit.co.uk.

Blow Up MouseIf the mini laptop mouse you’ve been using just isn’t portable enough, then you should look into picking up the Jelly Click. It’s the first mouse that fully deflates and folds up so that you can carry it anywhere. All the electronic circuity lives on a small flexible board. The body itself is just soft plastic. Whenever you need a mouse, blow up the Jelly Click, attach the USB cable and you’re good to go. It’s just the kind of useless gadget that I could really go for.
