Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo. This may be one of the most unique grammatically correct sentences in the English language. The three different uses of the word buffalo include the city, the animal, and the verb meaning to harass. The meaning of the sentence can be stated in a more understandable way using synonyms. Bison from the city of Buffalo [Buffalo buffalo], who are harassed by other bison from the city of Buffalo [Buffalo buffalo buffalo], themselves harass a third group of bison from Buffalo [buffalo Buffalo buffalo]. Now that’s a lot of buffalo. Read more about the structure and the history of this sentence on Wikipedia.

Pen Cap UtensilsDo you often find yourself eating at your desk? Is it just too much work to go to the cafeteria to grab a plastic fork and knife so that you can enjoy that salad? Well, you may be one of the few people who could benefit from the Din-Ink pen cap dining utensils. As the website describes, this is a set of pen caps, including a fork-cap, a knife-cap and a spoon-cap, that replaces the normal pen cap during lunch time. It’s unclear whether this is a real product or just a joke, since the site only says that they are “coming soon” and lists no price, but the concept is interesting nonetheless. The only thing missing is the spork cap. How am I supposed to eat Taco Bell without a spork?

pizzaPizza seems like a fairly simple food. A crust of dough is covered by a tomato based sauce, cheese, and toppings before being baked in a hot oven. If you stop to think about it, however, there are many interesting ways that the simple food is prepared, and many of them are regional variations. I’m not talking about the latest change made by Pizza Hut to put cheese in the crust, add another layer of pepperoni, or fill sausages with pizza sauce. SeriousEats.com has a story detailing the different styles of pizza around the country, and it’s pretty interesting to read a little about the history about the origin of these different kinds of pie.

Paper Airplane LauncherRemember when you were in grade school, and the most important part of your day was figuring out whose paper airplane design flew the farthest? I remember that there was one kid who was just better than the rest of us at launching his plane. He could have thrown an unfolded piece of paper and still beat half of us. Don’t let your kids suffer through the same unfairness. Buy them the electric paper airplane launcher, so that everyone’s planes can be judged on an even playing field. It’s only $16 at Amazon, and I think it’s worth the price to save little Billy and Susie from that master plane tosser.

Powerstrip ClipIn a home office, cord management is always an issue. Electronics which need to be connected to the wall and to each other have the potential to create a mess of cords which becomes almost impossible to control over time. I like anything which can make that process a little bit easier, and in certain situations, this clip-on powerstrip from Belkin can do just that. The problem I see is that most desks don’t have the perfect place to clip this on. Unless you converted an old table into your desk, there’s a good chance that this is not going to work, and it’s not going to do anything to help with network cords, monitor cords, USB cords, speaker cords, mouse and keyboard cords, and on and on. You need to start somewhere, however, so if you want to tame the power cords in your environment, Belkin might have the solution.

moustacheThe World Beard and Moustache championships is held every two years, and by all accounts it’s an exciting and fun-filled event. The 2009 version will be in Anchorage Alaska in May 2009. Franz “Schani” Mitterhauser, a contestant shown here, has won numerous accolades around the world with his impressive partial beard, and he hopes that his streak will continue in Anchorage. Some of the other extraordinary examples of facial follicles can be seen in the gallery of previous champions.

Hand ElephantItalian artist Guido Daniele is known for his creative body painting, and his creations of realistic looking hand animals are truly impressive. I particularly like the elephant shown here, because the texture of the skin adds even more realism. For more good examples of his technique, visit galleries one and two of his animal hand art, or visit his homepage to take a look at other types of art.

Restaurant WasteJack Davis, an 11-year-old from Florida, saw an injustice and decided to do something about it. There is a Florida law which states that a restaurant is responsible for their food making a person sick regardless if it was sold, donated, or given away. Because of that, eateries routinely throw extra food in the trash or send it to a composting company in bins like the ones shown here. Recognizing that much of the food is still perfectly edible, Jack wrote a letter to his congressman asking if anything could be done to change the law. State Senator Nan Rich fell in love with the idea, and it’s now on the fast track to becoming a reality. “If you think there’s a problem in the world,” Jack said, “you don’t wait for other people to fix it. You have to try to fix it yourself.”

moviepopcornThere are a lot of sources for information about current movies and entertainment, but the field is narrowed when you are searching for news about what’s coming. A good resource for that kind of information is I Watch Stuff, an entertainment website specializing in projects which are in their early stages and consequently still below the radar of Entertainment Tonight, People Magazine, and USA Today Life Section. I used to read Premier magazine for similar information, but they unfortunately stopped printing their magazine and started sending me Us Weekly which turned out to be a completely unsuitable replacement. They do still maintain a website, but I find I Watch Stuff to be more interesting and less sensational.

Popcorn ForkYou gotta love it when people invent and try to market utensils that are just plain unnecessary. Just for its conversation starting properties, I still sometimes pull out the pizza cutter fork that my wife gave to me for a funny gift. In that same tradition, you can now get yourself a popcorn fork, which amounts to a three pronged plastic utensil that you can use like a claw to grab a handful of popcorn without touching it. This might come from the same people who brought us the NosePocket Handkerchief, because they have a similar sounding slogan. They say that this is “the most unique utensil since the Dark Ages.” As a bonus, they build in a mini salt shaker, so that you can be sure to add a heart-stopping amount of sodium to every bite. You can buy them online in lots of 6, 12, or 24 for about a dollar a piece.

Spoon with CherryArt is great for it’s meaning, and sometimes for it’s sheer frivolity. Most of the sculptures in this list of 33 weird statues and sculptures around the world fit into the latter category, though some of the examples have arguably deeper meanings. Pictured here is a local favorite which the blogger left off of his list. The Spoonbridge With Cherry is located in the Sculpture Garden near the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

faucetbuddyFaucet Buddy is a faucet accessory that measures and displays the amount of water used, as well as the temperature of the water. Built by designer Baek Uyeol who won a Red Dot Design Award for his effort. It’s still in the prototype stage, but I could see a decent sized market for this product in higher end homes. It appeals to safety concerns by helping you prevent scalding the little ones, and it appeals to to the environmentally friendly crowd by reminding one not to waste water. The designer even talks about adding wireless capabilities so that you can track the history of the water usage over time.

Plastic Surgery CupThe original author calls these the 19 best ads he has ever seen. I’m not sure if I would go that far, but there are some clever campaigns in this post at uaddit.com. Pictured here are paper cups with noses printed in such a way that you could test out how they would look and call the listed plastic surgery center to make your favorite one a reality. Other entries are good too. I like the Playboy Magazine Cover beach towel with only the model missing. A good-looking woman just needs to put on a bikini and lay down on it to complete the picture. The MacBook Pro and Leica camera ads are also good examples of eye-catching advertising.

clipboardDespite the mistake prone URL, cl1p.net has a good service to provide. By creating a short-lived website, you can easily copy and paste text and small files between two different computers using the site as a temporary clipboard. I have often used gmail to a similar end, but in certain situations this might be a better solution. The directions are simple:
1. Create a URL just by typing it into your browser. For example: www.cl1p.net/mystuff/
2. Paste in anything you want and hit “Save”
3. Visit the same address on a different computer to gather whatever you stored

Ocean FoamIn August of 2007, the coastline near Sydney, Australia became a churning bubble bath. Foam swallowed an entire beach and half the nearby buildings, including the local lifeguards’ center, in a freak display of nature at Yamba in New South Wales. One minute a group of teenage surfers were waiting to catch a wave, the next they were swallowed up in a giant bubble bath. The foam was so light that they could puff it out of their hands and watch it float away. It stretched for 30 miles out into the Pacific in a phenomenon not seen at the beach for more than three decades. Scientists explain that the foam is created by impurities in the ocean, such as salts, chemicals, dead plants, decomposed fish and excretions from seaweed. All are churned up together by powerful currents which cause the water to form bubbles. That sounds disgusting to me. The last thing I would do would be to go play in a foam of seaweed excretions and decomposed fish. See the full story on DailyMail.co.uk.
